Our proposal envisions transforming the art-deco 318 Oxford Street into a vibrant school and sixth-form college. The reimagining of the former department store, facilitates a dynamic learning environment, reflecting contemporary educational needs while respecting the building's architectural heritage. Through thoughtful design, this project aims to bridge the gap between private education and public accessibility, serving both students and the community at large, whilst enabling better building utilisation beyond tradition school hours.

  • Separate Entrances

Secondary school entrances from quieter, pedestrianised and planted streets. Sixth Form and Public entrance from busier Oxford Street.

  • Central Atrium

A new atrium brings natural light deep into the floorplate as well as providing the opportunity for passive ventilation.

  • Vertical Circulation

A grand, processional and inhabited stair creates a vibrant communal heart for the Secondary School.

  • Recreational Space

A roof extension provides a playground, garden and sports court. Winter gardens on the lower floors provide additional recreational spaces.

The key conceptual move is to divide the building diagonally in section using a grand SterlingOSB Zero stair, defining two separately accessed zones. In the atrium, retained concrete beams and columns provide a legible historic framework, into which SterlingOSB Zero elements are inserted. This provides a warm contrast in colour and texture as well as a robust and durable finish.

Below the stair and towards Oxford Street are an auditorium, library and gym, shared between school, college and public. These are separated from the school, accessed from the quieter entrance. A playful roof extension provides recreational spaces and gardens.
